Conclusion

If, therefore, Tewkesbury itself played a minor role in the war, the war played a major role in the development of Tewkesbury!
 

Perhaps we should leave - almost - the last word to Mrs. Care:

“I have no regrets. I’ve had a good life here, but will a/wars remember Tewkesbury with great affection. We visit there every time we return to England.”

Clearly the wear played an unforgettable part in the lives of the GI veterans who, in 1994, maintained a very active Veterans' Association in South Carolina.
